広い海で暮らす小さな赤い魚の群れに、一匹だけ真っ黒な魚がいた。それがスイミーで、泳ぐ速さではだれにも負けなかった。ある日、大きな魚に襲われて仲間を失い、スイミーはひとりで広い海をさまよう。見たこともない生き物たちに出会ううちに、岩かげで怯えて暮らす赤い魚の群れを見つけたスイミーは、みんなで海を泳ぐための方法を考えはじめる。
