スマートフォンの位置情報を使い、現実の場所を歩きながらポケモンを見つけて捕まえるゲーム。画面に現れたポケモンにモンスターボールを投げてゲットする。道具はポケストップで集め、ジムではプレイヤーが3つのチームのどれかに分かれて競い、レイドバトルではほかのプレイヤーと協力して強いポケモンに挑む。
