高知の港町で、かつて名人だった祖父・御神三吉から将棋を教わって育った氷室将介は、祖父の遺言に従ってプロ棋士になるべく上京し、奨励会に入る。順調に昇級する中、将棋会館の特別対局室で、のちに宿命のライバルとなる人物と出会う。
